Estes Park = excellent local eateries

Estes Park = excellent local eateries. Travel. Summer. Road trip. Family. Traveling with kids. Colorado.

Estes Park has always been, for me, a cute, touristy town that served as the gateway to one of my favorite places on earth, Rocky Mountain National Park.

Hannah, Larry & Hunter: we love how Fall River winds along the shops and restaurants in downtown Estes Park.

While I’m sure there are some really great shops, (especially walking along Fall River including Outdoor World where we’ve purchased awesome Kavu wallets and bags and a few water bottles over the years) Estes Park also means good eats … great, local food.

Greg & Larry: one of my husband’s childhood friends lives in Colorado now and met us for dinner at Poppy’s.

We try to hit at least one new place each time we go, and this summer, we tried Poppy’s Pizza & Grill, which did not disappoint.

Having never been there before, we opted for the Poppy’s Special Pizza which features Italian sausage, onions, green peppers and mushrooms. The more daring members of our group also tried the Thai Pizza which includes chicken, red onions, broccoli, water chestnuts and a peanut sauce. And to get that local fare, we also ordered the Rocky Mountain Pizza of smoked trout, capers, red onion, cream cheese and a garlic & olive oil sauce which was surprisingly my favorite.

We also stopped at Danish Cone Factory and Purple Mountain Taffy Company for some sweet treats, which I also highly recommend.

Love this old taffy puller that pulls the taffy while you shop. Noticed this sign for the first time 😀 Salt water taffy is one of my favorite sweet treats and this place has so many flavors!

A few other favorites from recent years include: Penelope’s World Famous Burgers & Fries, The Wapiti Pub, Big Horn Restaurant and You Need Pie!

We didn’t make it to You Need Pie! this time but one of my favorite photos ever of Larry. It’s SO good.

Since we love Rocky Mountain National Park so much, I’m sure we’ll be back soon. And we’re always looking for recommendations. What are your favorites from Estes Park?
